Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Deptford Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Deptford is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all locations where we work, including private gardens, communal grounds and commercial outdoor spaces.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We recognise our legal and moral responsibilities under current health and safety legislation. Our objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our gardening activities. We will provide safe systems of work, appropriate training, and suitable equipment to ensure that risks are controlled so far as is reasonably practicable.
Management at Gardeners Deptford will actively promote a positive safety culture, encouraging open communication about hazards and near misses, and ensuring that health and safety is given equal priority to quality and productivity.
Roles and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will ensure that this policy is implemented, reviewed and kept up to date. Management will allocate sufficient resources to maintain safe working conditions, provide training and secure competent advice where required.
Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day health and safety on site, including briefing team members, checking that risk controls are in place, and stopping work if conditions become unsafe.
Every employee and worker has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All personnel must follow company procedures, use equipment correctly, wear the required personal protective equipment and report hazards, incidents or defects without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before undertaking gardening work, we will identify hazards and assess the associated risks. This may include, but is not limited to, the use of powered machinery, manual handling, working at height, exposure to noise and vibration, use of chemicals, uneven ground, sharp tools, adverse weather conditions and interaction with the public.
Based on these assessments, we will develop and implement safe systems of work, such as clear procedures, exclusion zones, signage and supervision requirements. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change in work activities, equipment or location.
Training, Information and Supervision
Gardeners Deptford will provide appropriate health and safety training for all staff, including induction training for new starters and ongoing refresher training where necessary. This may cover the safe operation of tools and machinery, manual handling techniques, safe use of pesticides and fertilisers, first aid awareness, and emergency procedures.
Information about site-specific risks and control measures will be communicated before work begins. Less experienced staff will receive adequate supervision until they are deemed competent to work more independently.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
All tools, machinery and any vehicles used for gardening services will be selected, maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety standards. Equipment will be inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective or unsafe.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery and vehicles. Guards and safety devices must never be removed or disabled. Fuel, oils and other substances will be stored, transported and handled in a safe and secure manner.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated or adequately controlled by other means, Gardeners Deptford will provide appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include protective footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection where required.
Employees are responsible for wearing PPE as instructed, looking after it correctly and reporting any damage or loss so that it can be replaced promptly.
Hazardous Substances and Environmental Protection
When using horticultural chemicals, fertilisers, fuels or any other hazardous substances, we will follow control measures identified in risk assessments and safety data sheets. Application methods and quantities will be carefully managed to protect people, plants, wildlife and watercourses.
We aim to minimise our environmental impact by using safer alternatives where possible, avoiding unnecessary chemical use, segregating waste and disposing of green waste and other materials using approved methods.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. We will avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable by using mechanical aids, adjusting work methods or reorganising tasks. Where manual handling cannot be avoided, staff will be trained to use safe techniques and to work within sensible weight limits.
Breaks and task rotation will be encouraged to reduce strain and fatigue, and employees are expected to report any discomfort or symptoms early so that adjustments can be made.
Working at Height and Access
Any work at height, such as hedge cutting on tall boundaries or pruning higher branches, will be planned and carried out using appropriate access equipment. Ladders, platforms or other access systems will be checked before use and only used on stable ground. Overreaching and unsafe positioning are prohibited, and adverse weather conditions will be taken into account when planning such work.
Public and Client Safety
Many of our gardening activities take place in areas where clients, residents or members of the public may be present. We will take reasonable steps to keep others safe by using barriers or cones where necessary, storing tools safely, managing traffic movements, and timing more disruptive tasks to minimise disturbance and risk.
We will maintain clear and respectful communication with clients regarding any safety restrictions, such as temporary access limitations while work is carried out.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. We will record, investigate and, where necessary, report incidents in line with legal requirements. Findings from investigations will be used to improve our systems and prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including actions in the event of serious injury, fire, chemical spillage or sudden severe weather, will be communicated to staff. Suitable first aid arrangements will be in place, and necessary equipment will be carried when working on site.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Deptford will monitor health and safety performance through site checks, equipment inspections, training reviews and analysis of incident data. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed at least annually and whenever there are significant changes to our operations or to relevant legislation.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety and welcome feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders to help us enhance our standards and practices.
